Incorporating evolutionary based tools in cephalopod fisheries management

نویسندگان

چکیده

With gradual decline of global finfish resources, fisheries targeting cephalopods expanded. Yet, the stock assessment and management practice are frequently lacking, existing ones often remain poorly suited for cephalopod unique life-history. In light increasing ecological disturbances in marine ecosystems worldwide, assessing exploited species’ status response becomes vital devising effective strategies that would ensure their sustainable management. There is generally scarce understanding way other environmental stressors exert combined effects on dynamic long-term resilience. To end, evolutionary-based population studies inform identity, connectivity adaptive potential natural populations present a opportunity viability stocks. Such have been revolutionized last decade by proliferation next generation sequencing technologies. They offer new avenues expanding our knowledge, especially structure evolutionary responses to shifts pressures. this paper we elaborate how deep genomic insights into demographic fished could improve practice. We also propose common octopus Octopus vulgaris be suitable model species test power tools fishery scientists managers biological questions relevant exploitation.

Evolutionary models for, fisheries management

The potential use of functional evolutionary models and mechanistic ecological models as predictive tools in fisheries ecology is discussed. Evolution by natural selection is a force that leads to ecological adaptations of the individuals in the populations. By mechanistic modelling of the sense organs, we may model how individuals perceive their environment, and by life history theory we may p...

The Role of Marine Reserves as Fisheries Management Tools

I N T E R N A T I O N A L E X P E R I E N C E Around the world many fisheries have collapsed, including some in Australia. Consequently marine fisheries are under increasing pressure to adopt more precautionary management approaches. Although Australia’s fisheries are generally in good shape—few are overfished—many are fully exploited. Overseas experience tells us that even the best fisheries m...

Evolutionary impact assessment: accounting for evolutionary consequences of fishing in an ecosystem approach to fisheries management

Managing fisheries resources to maintain healthy ecosystems is one of the main goals of the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF). While a number of international treaties call for the implementation of EAF, there are still gaps in the underlying methodology. One aspect that has received substantial scientific attention recently is fisheries-induced evolution (FIE). Increasing evidence indicate...

Ecosystem-based Management of Coral Reef Fisheries

Issue 1: MPA benefits to fisheries It is crucial to avoid ‘overselling’ MPAs on the basis that increased catches due to spillover and enhanced recruitment from spawning in the MPA will more than make up for lost fishing grounds, increased effort and higher costs of fishers displaced from the MPA. To date, this assumption has never been proven; and spillover is generally measured as movement of ...

Incorporating Constructive Tools into a Generic Language-based Editor Incorporating Constructive Tools into a Generic Language-based Editor

As a uniform front-end user interface, a generic language-based editor should have the capability to incorporate both analytic and constructive back-end tools. In this paper , we analyse the requirements of, and propose a strategy for, integrating constructive tools into a generic language-based editor. The major issues addressed include deenition of software documents containing tool contribut...
